Principal’s Message
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again, I say REJOICE! Let your gentleness be love to everyone. The Lord is near”
-Philippians 4: 4-5
Please join us on Thursday for our Christmas Program. We will come together to rejoice in our community as our students share their gift of song with us. There are two performances, at 1:30, and 7:00. It is going to be a packed house, and we ask that you watch over each other, and help each other enjoy this gift. The 7th graders will be hosting hot chocolate, coffee, and cookies for $1.00 each after the 7:00 performance in the Hospitality Room.
We will be on vacation beginning Friday, December 20 and school will resume on Tuesday, January 7th. The office will be closed during this time, and we wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
If you look for me at Christmas You won’t find a special star- I am no longer just in Bethlehem, I am right there where you are. You may not be aware of Me amidst celebrations- You’ll have to look beyond stars, and the stores, and all the decorations. If you take a moment from the list of things to do, and listen to your heart, you’ll find, I’m waiting there for you.
You’re the reason that I came, and you’ll find Me in the stillness, as I am whispering your name.

Dear SFA Church and School Families,
As most of you know by now, our school’s drama teacher, Phyllis Gurnett, and her family have been dealing with a family health crisis involving their eldest son, Quinn, who is 19 years old. If your child has previously been in drama, they would know Quinn as in past years he helped his mother with practices and performances.
In July, Quinn enrolled in the Navy, hoping to become a Navy Seal. While in boot camp, a routine eye exam led to the discovery of a brain tumor. At the time of the discovery, Quinn was rushed to Chicago and underwent 3 separate brain surgeries before it was determined that the tumor is malignant and would require chemo and radiation. During that time, Phyllis and her husband, David, were taking turns traveling between California and Chicago to be with Quinn, while also taking care of the remaining children here at home. The Gurnett’s have eight sons ranging in age from 19 years (Quinn) down to 1 year (Chapman).
Quinn is back in California with his family, but is now undergoing chemo and will start with radiation treatments in January, which require travel back and forth to San Francisco – Sunday through Friday for six (6) weeks. While Phyllis is involved with the drama practices and performances, husband David will travel and stay with Quinn. At home, the older Gurnett boys will take care of the younger ones.
A number of our School and Church Members have been wondering what could be done to help ease some of the pressure on the Gurnett Family during this critical time in their lives. Phyllis’ busiest days are Wednesday, Thursday and Friday when she is working with the drama students at St. Mary’s, St. Francis and Christ the King. In addition to teaching Drama, Phyllis is the Music Director at Christ the King Church. Providing a meal for the family on these days, will be a big help for Phyllis.
A Sign Up Genius has been started for this purpose. If you would like to help out with a meal, please send your e-mail address to [email protected] and ask to be included in the Sign Up. The family has no known food allergies and the only food they DO NOT eat is Pasta in any form. Phyllis has tried, but the boys just don’t like it!
The Drama students are currently rehearsing for Frozen, Jr., with performances to be held January 9th through 16th at the Danville Theatre. If you would like to see the production, please contact the school office for information on tickets. It’s sure to be a crowd pleaser.
Some of you have asked about a “Go Fund Me” account and there is one that was set up by family friend, Tess Mabee McIntosh. It can be found at the gofundme.com website by clicking on the search button in the top left corner and searching under “Quinn Gurnett”. You should see a photo of Phyllis, her husband David and their sons. It will identify them as living in Brentwood.
Another option, would be to provide gift cards for take-out restaurants or gas – you can even use ones from our school script program. They don’t have take out or eat out often due to the expense of feeding themselves and 8 growing boys, but these are the restaurants close to where they live: Chipotle, Subway, Melo’s, Conina Medina, Mimi’s Cafe, Kinders, Lumpy’s Diner and Digger’s Diner.
Lastly, the only thing Phyllis has asked for is your continued prayers for Quinn. We all know the value of prayer cannot be understated.
Many thanks to those of you who have already signed up for a meal, donated to the Go Fund Me Account and/or who have provided other support to Phyllis and her Family. They are most deserving and very appreciative of every gesture.
Best wishes to each and every one of you for a wonderful holiday season and a healthy, happy New Year!
